Education Announces Open Meetings
to Provide Input Regarding the Special Education Regulations

Purpose:
The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 will require the revision of the Regulations Governing Special Education Program for Children with Disabilities in Virginia and the Special Education Program Standards. The Department of Education is hosting public meetings to give educators, parents and members of the public the opportunity to provide input at the "front-end," before the regulatory process starts.
The Regulatory Review Process provides for a 30-day public comment period after the Notice of Intended Regulatory Action is published in the Virginia Registrar of Regulations and a 60 public comment period after the proposed regulations are approved by the Board of Education.

An opporunity for comment will also be available on the Department of Education's home page. The home page currently posts the 2 sets of regulations. the Department of Education home page can be accessed @ www.pen.k12.va.us.
In addition, comments will be held in writing. Comments should be directed to the Virginia Department of Education, Division of Special Education and Student Services, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120.
